Read the Q&A that Naida Redgrave from Professional Jeweller Magazine did with Jermaine Jackson at Baselworld. As Baselworld continues in full swing, Professional Jeweller sits down with Jermaine Jackson to discuss his new jewellery line, breaking world records and his plans to rock the jewellery world.
Could you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind your new jewellery lines?
It started when I designed a 50th anniversary ring, which I presented to my brothers on the television programme Good Morning Britain. My business partners in Hong Kong know Coronet, and Aaron Shum, so I sent over my drawings and got moulds developed, and it started from there. I wanted to have a ring that represented us being in the industry for 50 years, so that’s how it all started.
What made you gravitate towards jewellery design after being in the music industry?
The whole idea was jewellery and music goes together. Musicians wear jewellery on stage, and that’s why I wanted to go into this business. I’m all about quality and long-term, and that’s what Jermaine Jackson Fine Jewelry is about – quality.
How long has the jewellery line been in the pipeline?
Around a year, but there’s much more coming soon.
Could you tell us a little bit more about the world record?
That was very exciting. We set a new Guiness World record for the most jewels on a guitar. There were 16,033 Swarovski gemstones hand-set on it. It was co-designed by myself and Alice Trinh, who’s the product director of Aaron Shum Jewelry.
What’s it like to play?
It’s very heavy. The lady who approved it for the Guinness World records wasn’t concerned with how it looked, as long as it worked. So I played it and she saw that it worked and she gave us the record.
What does the future hold for Jermaine Jackson Fine Jewelry?
As you can see here at Baselworld, the big boys have been out there for many, many years. I feel we’re going to get there. We have a big following already and we’ve had a good response at the show. I hope to be successful enough to be 50 years in the jewellery business like we are in the music business, and to be known for both great songs and great jewellery.

With all topics on the table during CNN’s GOP Town Hall on February 18th, Donald Trump’s conversation with Anderson Cooper eventually turned to Michael Jackson. “Michael Jackson was actually a very good friend of mine,” Trump said, when Cooper asked him about his taste in music. Trump added that Michael’s declined because of a lack of confidence. “He was an unbelievably talented guy. He lost his confidence. He lost tremendous confidence because of, honestly, bad-bad-bad surgery. He had the worst. He had people that did numbers on him that were just unbelievable,” Trump said about Jackson’s face. “You know, the plastic surgeons. He was an unbelievable talent who actually lost his confidence. Believe it or not, when you lose your confidence in something you can even lose your talent.” Trump explained that Michael lived in Trump Tower at one point, noting that MJ even got married at one of Trump’s resorts. “I knew the real story of Michael Jackson,” he said. “He was truly one of the most talented people.” Actually, earlier in the day, a voter asked Trump to sign a photograph of himself with Michael Jackson.
On Twitter, Jermaine Jackson commented on Trump's words:
'Friends' don't pay tribute by peddling b.s. theories about Michael's 'loss in confidence'. This fool Trump needs to sit down. Michael's confidence was affected by the pressures, injustice and vitriol of external circumstances. Period.Name-dropping Michael don't make you cool and won't win you votes. Especially when using botched facts.

50 Years In Music
Jermaine La Jaune Jackson, was born on December 11, 1954, in Gary, Indiana, the fourth of ten children. Initially he sang lead and played rhythm guitar in The Jackson 5, but switched to bass and back-up vocals.
The fourth child of Katherine and Joseph Jackson, Jermaine and his 9 siblings had music in their blood; Katherine was an aspiring pianist and singer, and Joseph briefly played guitar with his brother in their band, The Falcons. But while music was their passion, it didn’t pay the bills. So Joseph supported his family with his job at U.S. Steel while Katherine stayed at home and raised the children. While his father worked long hours as a crane operator, Jermaine and his brothers Tito and Jackie practiced their own songs, sometimes on their father’s guitar. One night, after Tito accidentally broke a string on his father’s instrument, the trio had to own up to their late night practicing. Joe, out of anger, made the boys demonstrate their musicianship. Impressed, he recognized the boys’ potential and began encouraging them to perform as a group. Jermaine and his two older brothers began The Jackson Brothers in 1964.
By the end of 1965, Jermaine’s younger brothers Marlon and Michael had also joined, creating The Jackson 5. After Jermaine and the group won a talent contest held at brother Jackie’s high school, The Jackson 5 began taking their performances more seriously. Jermaine moved from lead singer to back-up singer and bassist after several years as the rhythm guitarist and lead singer.

Your parents were major influences in your early life?
They still are, especially my mother. She reminds me of what a real lady should be. My mother was incredible giving my father many children, this is the ultimate show of how much she loved her husband, to bear children. They taught me that life is about love of family whether you live in poverty or you live on the richest side of town, I’d rather be poor and happy, rather than rich and miserable.
